Block Island

Springtime is when Block Island comes alive again.  Bring a sweater as the mainland warms up much faster and then scroll to plan your next adventure.

History & Fun Facts

The Block Island Ferry is a generational family owned business that started when an astute Polish immigrant known for his ability to fix anything from toasters to ferries, capitalized on his genius and indispensable talents to take over the local island ferry company.  Today, his family company provides memorable water services to Block Island, Newport, and even New York, via Cross Sound Ferry. His  ferry rides to and from Block Island are an integral part of any magical visit to this beautiful piece of Narragansettland.

Beaches

Block Island Town Beach, (Fred Benson Beach) is sandy and beautiful, walking distance from the Pt Judith Ferry. The parking lot is located across from 604 Corn Neck Road, a mile from the port but you can cut down to the beach within a half mile's walk. Make a right off the ferry towards the old Gables, now the BI Beach House, left on Dodge and right on Corn Neck.

This eastern facing sandy shore collectively known as Crescent Beach is a great place to catch the sunrise and extends up to Scotch Beach, Mansion Beach and beyond. The waves and surf get bigger as you go north towards the north shore and the north lighthouse. No swimming there as Mother Nature makes that a foolish venture. Mansion Beach parking is located off Mansion Rd, about three miles from the ferry. (Note* Moped restrictions apply here and on many dirt/beach roads on the island.)

Ballard's Beach is a very popular place for day trippers who want to dine and cocktail in the sun. With more umbrellas in the glasses than the sand, Ballard's is a more social and lively beach experience than other quieter, sandy spots.

Mohegan Bluffs - At the south end of Spring Street, off of Mohegan Trail, you'll find the The Mohegan Bluffs; a stunning place to visit with life validating views of the ocean. A caution again for swimers, the south side of the island is a wild expression of Mother Nature and wading is wise for all but the most experienced swimmers.

Block Island is an empty paradise for walkers and hikers in the winter. Just bring your winter gear.  The Atlantic winds are not for the faint of heart or the less dressed.

Winter on the Block is a cycler's dream come true.

With empty roads, virtually zero cars, have at it.  Just use extreme caution for the few cars that are there as they may not be expecting you either.

Young ones and babies may be bored in the winter on Block Island unless they love to run around on the empty stretches of beach.  And yes, you always have the ferry ride which can be a highlight of your Block Island visit, young and old.
